A Little Scary

John Kenn likes drawing scary little one-scene narratives. Little, in the literal sense: apparently he likes to draw them on Post It note sheets. I'm not quite sure what size Post Its he stocks, but these drawings look like they were done at much larger scale, because the level of detail is so incredible, it's almost scary.

Kenn works solely in monochrome, and his inks have an etching-like quality to them. The images are captivating, equal parts freaky, charming and curious. Freaky because his monsters are indeed monstrous, but charming because there's always some element of innocence to balance the picture, often in some oblivious or nonplussed people, usually children. It's like monsters on Sesame Street who were originally portrayed as frightening in some early skits, but in the end no one was actually afraid of them. And curious, because there's an untold story going on, and you feel like you entered in media res; you want to know how you got to that snapshot and where it goes from there. And did I mention these are on Post it Notes? Frighteningly good. Visit his blog, johnkenn.blogspot.com for more of his work.

You wrote everything I felt about Kenn's work but couldn't express in English (and, maybe, even in my mother language).

This is an excellent post and your whole blog seems equally interesting.
Bookmarked :D !
